A New Era Begins at CUC

After a prolonged vacancy and under the pressure of an EPA stipulated order, the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation (CUC) has reached a significant milestone with the appointment of its new Deputy Director, Tom Winkler. We at KI Ex are thrilled to have played a pivotal role in filling this hard-to-place executive position, ensuring that CUC has the leadership it needs to move forward.

Bringing top-tier talent to the CNMI is never an easy task, but it is a challenge we embrace. We understand that relocating to a new home—especially one as far as Anchorage, Alaska—requires a seamless transition. That is why the KI Ex hospitality team was honored to greet Tom and his wife upon their arrival at the Francisco C. Ada/Saipan International Airport.

A Warm Welcome to Saipan

After an exhausting journey spanning from Anchorage to Tokyo, and finally to their new home in Saipan for the next four years, we wanted their first moments on the island to feel warm and welcoming. Our team was there with smiles and a helping hand, ready to assist with luggage and ensure they felt at ease the moment they stepped off the plane.

The welcome, however, didn't stop at the airport. To officially introduce the Winklers to the community and to celebrate this new chapter with our partners, we hosted a special welcoming luncheon at the KI Ex offices. We were joined by the CUC HR Team to break bread and share in the excitement of what lies ahead.

Celebrating Local Culture

In true CHamoru fashion, we honored our new residents with a traditional mwaar (flower crown), symbolizing respect and the spirit of hospitality that defines our islands. To sweeten the welcome, we presented them with a gift basket overflowing with Saipan-made goodies—a taste of the local flavors and artisan crafts we are so proud of.

This successful placement is a testament to the strong partnership between KI Ex and CUC. We understood the urgency of the EPA stipulated order and the critical nature of this role. By leveraging our network and commitment to finding the right fit, we were able to secure a candidate who is not only qualified but excited to call the CNMI home.

Building a Stronger Community

PK Daigo, Managing Director & Chief Product Development Officer of KI Tech—KI Ex’s newest startup software development division—shared his thoughts on the synergy between welcoming new talent and the growth of the local economy:

"At KI Tech, we are building platforms to future-proof the Marianas, but technology is only as strong as the people behind it. Seeing Tom and his wife arrive, supported by the KI Ex team, is a powerful reminder that human connection is the foundation of all progress. We are building software, but KI Ex is building a community. We are proud to be under the same umbrella as a team that understands that filling a role isn't just about checking a box—it’s about changing a life and strengthening our islands. Welcome to the family, Tom."

We are incredibly grateful for the trust CUC has placed in us, and we look forward to continuing our collaboration to fill more key positions in the future. Whether it is navigating complex regulatory requirements or finding the perfect cultural fit for our unique island home, KI Ex remains dedicated to bridging the gap between exceptional talent and the CNMI’s most vital organizations.

Looking Ahead

As Tom and Linda Winkler settle into their new roles, we are excited about the future. Their expertise will undoubtedly contribute to the growth and development of CUC. We believe that strong leadership is essential for progress, especially in our unique environment.

The journey ahead will be filled with challenges and opportunities. We are committed to supporting Tom and Linda as they navigate their new surroundings. Our team is here to assist them in any way possible, ensuring their transition is smooth and enjoyable.

Embracing New Opportunities

The arrival of Tom Winkler is not just a new beginning for CUC; it is a chance for the entire community to come together. We encourage everyone to reach out and welcome the Winklers. Building connections is vital for fostering a sense of belonging and community spirit.

In conclusion, we extend a heartfelt welcome to Tom and Linda Winkler! May your next four years be filled with adventure, island spirit, and professional success. Together, we can create a brighter future for the CNMI.
